One of the pack.
I’ve been interviewing lately. These suits sit across from me and I try hard to read between the lines, looking at them between their gestures—the click of a pen, the movement of paper to the side of their desk—hoping for a glimpse somewhere beneath their crisp lapels and tidy buttons for their hearts.
When he greets me in the entryway, I am sitting on an oversized, ridiculously comfortable sofa reading a book on wolves (the school mascot) and trying my best to look professional and not like I am about to kick off my shoes and steadily inebriate myself into oblivion. He shakes my hand warmly and welcomes me into his office. The brownies on the corner of the desk seem like a good sign. He tells me someone must want something, then quickly retracts and tells me that it was an honest gesture of kindness. I take his admission as a sign of a healthy compulsion to acknowledge goodness.
